Artist Statement

Babette Angell, visual artist

My art practice includes abstract oil painting, printmaking (etching limited edition prints, artist books), basket making, photography and video. Responding to time and place manifests in work which has been culturally negotiated and transformed onto canvas, photography, video and paper.

The ideas of trace, movement and layering, is evident in my painting, where I respond to influences of Western abstraction with indigenous batik and painting, previously gained in the Northern Territory.

I have been looking at the use of corrugated iron and steel in the urban landscape. Under the layers of concrete and bricks, developed parks, bushland and playing fields, the original ground remains. The memory of the ground is my memory of place.

I use water based Faust AquaLine etching inks from Neil's Art Store because of their smooth consistency. Plates can be cleaned without using toxic chemicals, which is a safer healthier practice and better for the environment.

My work examines environmental issues about how we manage our water, land, flora and fauna, and current works are focused on Cudgen Lake in the Coast Northern New South Wales, Australia.
